AUTUMN WEEKEND & WINE TASTING IN ELTVILLE, RHEINGAU VALLEY

DECEMBER 2024

A few years ago I visited Eltville as a daytrip from Wiesbaden and was impressed by the beautiful surroundings and relaxed atmosphere. When I was looking for a destination for a wine tasting weekend with friends, I remembered the lovely hotel with courtyard garden I spotted two years ago in Eltville. Eltville has a few “weinguts” that also offer hotel rooms and we were incredibly happy with our choice.

Where we stayed

We booked two rooms at Weingut Koegler, in the middle of Eltville. The rooms are in modern Fachwerk-style, which was comfortable and cozy. When you book a hotel room in the weekend you receive a complimentary wine tasting. We were able to taste five wines and really liked how our host explained everything. You could feel a real love for the wines. You can also book a private wine cellar tour for about โ‚ฌ 250 for a group. What is particulary good about the hotel is that it features a lovely courtyard style garden, which looked absolutely beautiful in autumn. If you are lucky with the weather you can stay in the garden until 10PM, which is what we did. The weinstand also serves some simple dishes such as soup and flammkuchen. Unfortunately the pizza stand was closed when we visited. Breakfast is included in your room rate and it is served in a charming restaurant. Our experience at the hotel was great, because we had good weather and were able to really enjoy the garden and all the wines. I can imagine the hotel loses some of its charms when it is raining non-stop, so keep that in mind when booking.

Eltville am Rhein

Eltville itself is a lovely little fachwerk town. You can read about my summer experience here. I found Eltville particularly beautiful in autumn. The town is surrouned by vineyards, who turn shades of yellow and red, an impressive sight. Eltville is known as the rosen-town of the Rheingau and these bloomed far into October. Eltville also has a castle located at the riverside, the gardens are free to enter and there still was a lot in bloom in October.

One of my favorite spots in Eltville is the Weinprobierstand, where you can taste all sorts of wines for a small fee, and have a seat underneath the trees.

If you want to see some more vineyards, than I would advise to head up the Sonnenberg. We drove there via google maps, parked in the little town up the hill and walked over to Sonnenberghรคuschen from which you have vineyard views overlooking Eltville. It was a bit foggy the morning that we visited, but that really completed the autumn vibes.

Other interesting location

On our way back we drove via the Mosel and stopped for lunch in Alken. The vineyards of the Mosel are even steeper than in the Rheingau valley, offering even more stunning colorful leafs. Next year I would love to revisit Bernkastel-Kues for autumn season!
