SEPTEMBER 2024
On our great campervan roadtrip through Ireland we visited the treetop walk Beyond the Trees in Avondale. However, as it is located about one hour from Dublin it is very well possible to do as a day trip. If you are looking for some very green Irish nature, the treetop walk will give you perfect views. We have done some treetop walks before, they are always fun for adults as well as kids. In this blogpost I will give you an impression of our Irish treetop walk.
Practical information
Beyond the Trees is located about one hour drive south of Dublin. We drove from Rosslare, where we arrived with the ferry, which is also just over an hour drive. We visited in the summer holidays, so it was super busy with kids. Luckily, Hugo didn’t have to wait too long at the slide, because apparently the queue can be longer than one hour on busy days. Access to the treetop walk costs € 16, kids under tree are free and older kids get a small discount. No need to book in advance. The entrance ticket does not include access to the slide, you need to pay an additional € 2 when you are at the top, if you want to use the slide (bring cash!). The treetop walk is fully wheelchair + stroller accessible. On the premises you can also visit Avondale House, the history is supposedly very interesting, but we didn’t visit as it is not a super toddler friendly activity.
Definitely plan to spend a few hours at Avondale if you are visiting with kids. There is a great playground, walled garden, pizza restaurant and restaurant with simple meals as well. Sometimes there are special activities, such as the Christmas tree event, which looks magical! BTW: you have to pay for parking as well.
Treetop Walk
The Treetop Walk starts with a walkway through the forest, that leads you to the viewing tower. The walkway has little obstacles and activities for kids. The viewing tower is 38 meters high and gives beautiful views over the Avondale Forest Park and the Wicklow Mountains. In the middle of the viewing tower there is a giant slide, which is about 90 meters long. Parents are allowed to accompany little kids, so Hielke accompanied Hugo. Please note that you need to pay a small fee for the slide and that it can be closed when the weather is bad. I would highly recommend visiting the Treetop Walk, especially with kids between 2-12 years old!
