CYCLING IN THE WACHAU VALLEY

JUNE 2019

The absolute highlight of my trip to Vienna was the cycling tour in the Wachau Valley. If you have a spare day (just create a spare day), during your Vienna trip, you must do this activity! The Wachau Valley is the home of my favorite wine: Grüner Veltliner (and Riesling), so there are plenty of wineries where you will be able to do tastings.

How to get there

We took the train from Vienna to Krems, this takes about 1 hour (€ 16). In Krems we rented a bike in Krems at Aichinger bicyle + sport (€ 15 per bike). We reserved a bike by phone, which you can do to be sure there are bikes available. They do not open late at night, so if you are able to rent a bike in Vienna, you could also bring it to Krems by train to not be dependent on the opening hours.

Cycling route

We arrived in Krems at 11AM and returned our bike at 16.30PM. In this time we were able to cycle from Krems to Weissenkirchen and back. We stopped in the lovely little village Dürnstein and in Weissenkirchen itself to visit restaurants and wineries and we also stopped several times to take pictures in the vineyards and to enjoy the views. The day felt pretty rushed at times, so I would recommend to take a train earlier to be able to relax more (and taste more wine!). The towns are all indicated really well, so it is really easy to cycle from one town to another.

Staying the night

I absolutely loved our cycling tour in the Wachau valley and would have loved to stay the night in the cute little town of Weissenkirchen, to have more time to enjoy the Wachau valley. Another idea would be to cycle to Melk, and take the train back from Melk to Krems/Vienna.
