FRANKFURT CHRISTMAS MARKETS: FRANKFURT IS ONE BIG CHRISTMAS MARKET!

FEBRUARY 2024

I know the timing for this blogpost is a little off, but I still have some catching up to do and update you on the Christmas trips I did in November and December. In a few months this Frankfurt Christmas markets guide will come in handy as you are researching which Christmas markets to visit! I had never been to Frankfurt before and was happy I got to experience the city in the best season: completely decked out with Christmas market throughout the city!

Practical information Frankfurt Christmas markets

Frankfurt is one of the cities in Germany which has the highest amount of stalls. There are several markets spread throughout the city, so you can easily spend a day walking from Christmas market to Christmas market. It honestly is quite easy to get around, because the stalls will bring you from market to market. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes because you will be walking a lot! We visited the Christmas markets on a Friday and the lines at the foodstalls weren’t bad, I definitely found it less crowded than Cologne. Most markets are open daily from 10AM-9PM and on Sunday they open at 11AM.

I found that Frankfurt had quite a lot of affordable hotels, also during the Christmas season. We booked a room in Adler hotel Frankfurt for โ‚ฌ 80 per room including breakfast. The hotel was simple, but clean, comfortable and close to the city center.

My favorite Christmas markets in Frankfurt

We walked all the way from Rossmarkt to Romerberg and kept running into Christmas markets, there even is a pink themed Christmas market at Friedrich Stolze platz.

Hauptwache: When we popped out of the U-bahn we immediately started Christmarket-ing at Hauptwache. I particularly found this area very good for food, but there are also some cute attractions such as the little train that you see in the pictures. Rides for kids attractions were about โ‚ฌ 3,5 all throughout Frankfurt.

Rossmarkt: From Hauptwache we walked in the direction of Rossmarkt. This area is really good with kids, there is quite some attractions, such as another cute train and a ferris wheel. The Rossmarkt is where you can find the iconic Weihnachtsturm.

Paulskirche: The markets at the Paulkirche are very good for shopping gifts, if you are still looking for decorations or Christmas houses, this is the place to be!

Rรถmerberg: All the way to Rรถmerberg you will find streets lined with Christmas stalls. The Rรถmerberg is the most iconic square of Frankfurt, it is surrounded by gingerbread houses adding to the Christmas vibe. Frankfurt’s large Christmas tree can also be found on the Rรถmerberg. Definitely the most historic and beautiful area of Frankfurt. We made the mistake to end at Rรถmerberg and though it is very beautiful lit up, it gets very busy during the day, so best to come here early!

Other activities in Frankfurt

On our Frankfurt Christmas market trip, we also visited Palmengarten Frankfurt: the botanic garden. I was surprised at the amount of greenhouses and would recommend visiting it, in the case you are interested in plants and flowers. You can find my blogpost here.

Last year I visited Schloss Schwetzingen in summer time and was impressed with this pink castle and the castle grounds. It is quite close to Frankfurt, so this could also be a good combo with the Christmas markets!
