HEIDE HIMMEL & WILDPARK LÜNEBURGER HEIDE: HIDDEN GEMS NEAR HAMBURG

APRIL 2025

On our roadtrip in Northern Germany we visited Heide Himmel Tree Top Walk & the Wildpark Lüneburger Heide. Originally we came for Heide Himmel, but we upgraded our tickets upon arrival to also include the wildpark. Germany has plenty of Tree Top Walks (baumwipfelpfaden) and we always try to visit one when we are in a new region. The nature surrounding Heide Himmel is beautiful and you will find this same style of landscaping and forest in the wild park/zoo. If you are looking for a great day out for parents and kids near Hamburg, this is an activity for you!

Practical information

You can buy tickets for Heide Himmel and the Wildpark individually, or buy them as a set. An entrance ticket to Heide Himmel costs € 11 for adults and for € 25 you also have access to the Wildpark. Tickets for the Wildpark are € 16 per adult, so you save a bit of money by buying the set. Tickets for children until 2 are free and from 3-14 years the set price is € 20. Parking is quieter at Heide Himmel than at the Wildpark. You can access Heide Himmel from the Wildpark and vice versa. Both parks are open year-round, but close earlier in wintertime. Please check the official website for actual opening hours.

There are several food options in the parks. We had lunch at the restaurant of Heide Himmel, which had a nice terrace too. It wasn’t super cheap, but we were satisfied with our meals. We didn’t book tickets online, even on the Easter weekend this did not seem necessary.

Heide Himmel

The Heide Himmel Baumwipfelpfad has the same set up as most of the tree top walks in Germany. There is a long elevated path between the trees that leads up to a lookout tower. However, note that there is no slide at the top, which is the case at for example the Baumwipfelpfad near Baden-Baden. The Baumwipfelpfaden are focused on education and you will find several informative games along the way. Our toddler loves visiting them and finds it a real adventure! Special feature of Heide Himmel is that you can spot the wolves and tigers from the tree top walk, as you are overlooking Wildpark Lüneburger Heide.

Surrounding the Baumwipfelpfad there is some more entertainment for the kids, such as a playground in the typical wooden style. Overall, I would recommend to stay about 1-1,5 hours.

Wildpark Lüneburger Heide

When we discovered that there was a wildpark/zoo next to the Tree Top Walk, we decided to upgrade our tickets. This was quite a spontaneous plan and luckily we ended up loving the wildpark. What distinguishes the wildpark from a regular zoo, is the natural style in which it was built. It is very spacious and there even are free roaming animals! The park is focused on education and works with animal protection organisations. You won’t find all animals represented, but the park has wolves, bears, tigers and fun smaller animals. The wolves interact with each other and we could even hear them howling. We visited on a Easter weekend, but the park didn’t feel crowded as visitors easily spread out.

The most fun area was the area in which the deer roam free, they are very cheeky and will try to steel food you are carrying with you! Consider yourself warned. Like most parks, this park caters to kids and you will find playing areas as well. We had a great day, even if the weather didn’t cooperate.
