JULY 2024
The Eibsee is one of those stunning natural phenomena that is a highlight on a German roadtrip. We usually find Germany super campervan-friendly, but this was not the case at Eibsee. At the Eibsee there simply is no option to park your campervan. If you do not want to add a few extra kilometers to your hike, it is best to plan your visit in advance. We also noted that the car parking filled up quickly, so you can also follow my recommendations if you are traveling by car in the high season.
Eibsee information
The Eibsee is located at the border of Germany and Austria. If you do the almost 2-hour hike among the lake, you can spot the Zugspitze in the background (Germany’s only glacier). The Eibsee actually isn’t that cold and many people come to enjoy the water on a hot day. If you arrive to the Eibsee and don’t want to do the full-hike, but do want to take good pictures I would recommend to walk the lake counterclockwise. You will note that most people start the hike at the left side of the lake, but all the good photography spots are in the right side, opposite the Zugspitze. We took our pictures near the little bridge, but if you walk a little further in the direction of Sasseninsel, you will see some of the Insta-famous rocks on which you can take pictures. We were completely happy with our Eibsee experience and because I was still recovering from my herniated disc, we didn’t do the full hike.
The car parkings for the Eibsee are located near the Eibsee hotel and at the Zugspitze gondola parking. These parkings have height restrictions so it is not possible to park a campervan/ motorhome over there. There are a few restaurants at the Eibsee, but they are all without the Zugspitze view, so I would recommend to bring your own food.
Parking a campervan at Eibsee
I expected there to be some roadside parking near Eibsee, but it actually was quite a few kilometers from the Eibsee when we spotted the first parking options for campervans. We ended up parking at the parking of the Zugspitzbad in Grainau and take the bus from there. First few hours in this parking lot are free and after that you pay a small fee. The bus only goes once in an hour, so you have to do some planning to go for this option. The busride was only 10-minutes and comfortable enough. You can find the timetable here. In Grainau you can also take the cog train, but it also doesn’t go regularly. The train takes off in Garmisch-Partenkirchen so you can also do the full experience. You can find the timetable here.
