KENT: THE GARDEN OF ENGLAND

JULY 2019

On my British road trip I had to bring a visit to Kent, as the region Kent is known as the garden of England and is famous for its lush gardens. Together with the Cotswolds it is one of the greenest areas of England. When we visited in July the hollyhocks were in full bloom, which added extra color to everything we have visited.

The monestary gardens of Canterbury cathedral

Location

I stayed in a B&B a 10 minutes’ drive outside of Canterbury. The B&B is called China Farm Barn and had a lovely garden, which is available for use during your stay. The rooms were perfectly decorated in a cottage style, with deliciously smelling linen. In the mornings you receive an English breakfast in the kitchen, which was the perfect way to start the day. The owners are lovely people and willing to help you with dinner reservations and planning your itinerary.

Canterbury

Canterbury is a lovely hub from where to plan activities in the Kent area. It has a historic center which flows into a modern shopping street. I loved the cute little alleys and canals in Canterbury.

In Canterbury you go back in time

Canterbury has a famous Cathedral, which also has monastery gardens, which were my favorite part of the Cathedral. You get good photo opportunities when you visit in the late afternoon, as the light was beautiful. The entrance fee for the Cathedral is £ 12,50, and you can visit the monastery gardens for free.

Another cool activity in Canterbury is visiting the Westgate gardens. It is a public park which makes for a perfect picnic spot next to the river, surrounded by beautiful flowers.

Can you imagine living in one of these houses and having this view?

Canterbury has a lot of parking lots, which can easily be found by driving around the city. Sometimes you have to pay in cash, while at other ones you can pay by card once you leave.

St. Margarete’s at Cliffe

Of course I had to visit the white cliffs. I decided to visit them at St. Margarete’s at Cliffe. It is a pretty steep way down, which was kind of exciting having to drive at the left side of the road. Luckily we made it down, and back up. You can park close to the sea and go for a little stroll at the beach.

Leeds Castle & Gardens

Leeds Castle is located in Maidstone and is a 40 minute drive from Canterbury. When sorting my pictures I discovered that this blogpost would become to long, so I decided to give it a separate blogpost! You can find it here.

Lavender in Kent

Kent also has a lavender farm, I have written a blog post about it here.
