LOWTHER CASTLE & GARDENS: A MAGICAL MANSION IN THE LAKE DISTRICT

APRIL 2023

I found Lowther Castle a magical piece to visit in the Lake District. The ruin that remained on the ground is super interesting, it has been overgrown with plans and is such a mysterious spot. We discovered that Lowther Castle is one of the most kid-friendly castles to visit in the UK, as its gardens feature a lovely playing area in the style of the castle. I highly recommend adding Lowther Castle to your itinerary!

Practical information

The castle derives from the 1800s and it is built in a Gothic style. It is a private castle and not included in the National Trust membership. The entrance fee for adults is 11 pounds. There is a parking area near the castle, which provides free parking. Lowther Castle has reopened its gardens in 2020, parts of the gardens are still being replanted. There is a small café on the premises offering some snacks and drinks.

The gardens

The gardens of Lowther are currently being revived to reflect the historical state. The gardens behind the ruins are already finished and feature spectacular flowers, I absolutely loved this area. The gardens with the ruins as a backdrop looked magnificent! The gardens near the tea room are also finished, featuring many lavender & roses. Other areas of the gardens are still being planted, I can imagine the gardens getting even more lovely over time.

The playing area

Another fun part of Lowther castle is the playing area. The playing area is separated into two areas, one for little kids and one for older kids. We spent some time in the are for the little kids, which features a playing castle, several sandpits and even a zipline for babies. It was incredibly well maintained and fun! You would not find this at National Trust. If I lived in this area, I would definitely buy a season ticket to enjoy the gardens & playing area more often.
