FEBRUARY 2026
We happened to visit Nuremberg/Nürnberg on our way to our skiing destination, just after Christmas. In Germany the Christmas markets generally close after Christmas, so we didn’t expect there to be Christmas markets. However, Neurenberg turned out to be exceptionally lively and we found a great market too! Of course I would not keep this a secret for you, so I am sharing my Nuremberg after Christmas recommendations in a blogpost!
Things to do in Nuremberg after Christmas
Nuremberg’s Christkindlmarkt is world famous, but unfortunately it always closes before Christmas. We visited on December 27 and they were just breaking down all the stalls.

However, we were surprised to find that the Kinderweihnacht (Children’s Christmas market) was still open! You will find it just a short walk from the Christkindlmarkt, at the Hans-Sachs-Platz. My son also caught the Christmas market virus and was super happy to visit this beautiful market, aimed at kids. The vintage carroussel is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen, it even had a second floor with “hot air balloons”. It also had a little train, a ferris wheel, a swinging boat, but most important of all: a miniature land with trains. We couldn’t get Hugo to leave 😉 There are some food stands as well, offering simple meals such as sausage bread. I particularly loved all the beautiful decorations. The square where the market is held is not the most beautiful, but the decorations make up for that! The Kinderweihnacht is open until December 30, so that gives you some time to visit it over the Christmas break.

The Winter Village at the Jakobsmarkt is open even longer, until January 6. This is where you will find the giant ferris wheel. It is a shame that I didn’t know this before we visited as I would have factored in more time. But you can certainly find loads of Christmas vibes in Nuremberg after Christmas!

Don’t skip this in Nuremberg
Nuremberg has a beautiful historical city center, it has several boroughs that have their own “altstadt”. If you are in Nuremberg you should not skip the historical bridges. I loved roaming around the historical buildings near the Maxbrücke. Enjoying the historical fachwerk buildings, while the boys visited the Bratwurst museum. I was even treated to the perfect reflection moment. Nuremberg has so much historical significance and offers many museums. It felt very lively in December, with a great cafe culture. Unfortunately, we only had one afternoon in Nuremberg, but as I was super impressed with the few things we did see, I am sure we will be back!
