SEPTEMBER 2024
Nymans is one of the National Trust’s most famous and loved gardens. I was recommended this garden by my Anglophile and fellow garden-lover friend and it certainly didn’t disappoint. We visited in July, which is always a very good garden month in England and we almost visited the garden at it’s best (roses weren’t too happy with this year’s wetness). Whether it is the most beautiful garden in England, that is something you have to decide for yourself. I personally think it rivals the gorgeous Hidcote gardens, so definitely a must visit for garden lovers!
Practical information
Nymans is a National Trust property, so if you are a member you can visit for free. Otherwise it is a 20 pounds well spent. We visited in July on a friday afternoon, it was busy, but because everybody can spread out a lot, this was no issue at all. There is a large parking lot with overflow parking possibilities. There are two cafes that serve light meals for lunch. Nymans was more kid friendly than I expected, they even had a cute little playroom.
Nymans National Trust
Nymans used to belong to the family Messel and besides the enormous garden, you can also visit the house and ruins. We mainly came for the gardens, but we loved the art exhibition which you could find in the main house.
Nymans is split up into different sections and each season you can experience different natural wonders. In July we managed to visit during peak bloom of the hydrangeas, which was such a lovely sight. The walls of hydrangeas were enormous and colorful!
As with every English garden, there was a beautiful walled garden, which featured colorful herbaceous borders, fountains and entry features.
My favorite part of the garden was the walled garden that is attached to the house. It was an incredibly romantic design that highlights the beautiful buildings.
Unfortunately the rose garden really suffered under the wetness of the past months, lots of the roses had mildew and fungus issues. I still managed to get a few good close ups of pretty roses. It must be stunning in a good roses year.
Overall, the kids loved this colorful garden as well. There is just so much variety in colors and types and lots of grass where they were allowed to run around.
