Bilbao is a very underrated city, located in Basque Country in Spain. Though it gained some traction when the Guggenheim museum opened in 1997, it is still nowhere near as popular as it’s Basque brother San Sebastian or the very touristy Barcelona. The Guggenheim museum itself should be enough of a reason to visit Bilbao, but the city itself is also the perfect example of how excellent urban planning can create a very interesting tourist destination. We visited Bilbao during the high season of 2021 and were surprised of how easy going it was. I would even dare to say that Bilbao is your must visit summer destination of 2022 and in this blog I will tell you all about it!

Porto itself is a great city to visit, but it is also worth it to explore its surroundings. From Porto you can do many great day trips; Aveiro and Costa Nova amongst many of your options. Aveiro and Costa Nova are located very close to each other and about one hour of driving from Porto. If you are looking for a few beach days, this is a charming area. Please note that you will be swimming in the Atlantic Ocean and that it will be much colder than the Mediterranean Sea.

On our road trip this past summer we decided to do a little detour and visit the Douro valley when we were driving back from Porto to Spain. And I am so glad that we did! The Douro valley is relatively unexplored compared to other wine regions and I have no idea why, as it is much more beautiful than its famous colleagues. In the Douro valley you will find one of the most scenic drives in Europe, with breathtaking views along each corner. Luckily, the wine is pretty good too and you can have delicious food in the wine houses. I predict that the Douro valley will become more popular in the coming years, as people are exploring closer to home, so I advise to plan a trip as soon as possible, to have this beautiful area all to yourself!
