THE BEST BOTANICAL GARDEN I HAVE EVER VISITED: KEW GARDENS

First of all: I am probably going to have to cancel my upcoming travel plans because of the Corona virus. I had some small trips planned and Hielke and I also booked tickets to go to Uzbekistan, but we had to cancel that holiday. Luckily we were treated very kindly by Turkish Airlines! I still have some upcoming blogs regarding previous trips, so for the next weeks there will still be blogs, but after that it will become difficult when there is no content… I hope everybody stays safe in the current crisis!

I discovered the Royal Botanic Kew Gardens as they popped up on my Instagram feed with their Christmas lights show in 2018 and ever since I have wanted to go to Kew. When we visited London in February I didn’t expect this to be a good timing to visit Kew, however I was very wrong. From February – Half March Kew hosts the Orchid Festival in one of the glasshouses, which offered much added value to our visit in winter time. As Kew has three large glasshouses, it is possible to visit the gardens year-round. Of course there are more flowers once you visit in spring or summertime, but the greenhouses are more quiet during the wintertime, which came in handy when taking pictures.

LUCERNE & MOUNT PILATUS

Hielke and I visited Lucerne and the Swiss Alps as a day trip from Basel. The Swiss rail is a super efficient way to see more of Switzerland and the trip from Basel to Lucerne only took us 70 minutes. Lucerne is a beautiful city, located at Lake Lucerne and the base of the Swiss Alps. In the city centre you will find the “Kapellbrücke”, which is the oldest wooden covered bridge in the world. From Lucerne you can also bring a quick visit to the Swiss Alps, we took the gondola to Mount Pilatus for stunning views over the area.

VISITING BASEL: THE CULTURAL CAPITAL OF SWITZERLAND

Basel was never firmly on my radar of travel destinations, but it popped up as a city that was easy to visit by train. Hielke and I love traveling by train, we find it the most relaxing way to travel and we love that it is one of the most sustainable ways to travel. After researching Basel we became really excited to visit this city and to take the train from Basel to explore more of Switzerland. Basel is the unofficial cultural capital of Switzerland as it offers an enormous variety in museums. We found it incredibly difficult to make a choice which museum to visit. A benefit of Switzerland is that is has a quality network of trains, which makes it super easy to do day trips to other parts of the country, which is exactly what we did.
