PITSTOP IN CHILE: TWO NIGHTS IN VALPARAÍSO

Valparaíso has been a city that I had wanted to visit for a while, as it is located on a hill, with colorful houses, street art and with views of the ocean. Unfortunately, South America currently is not the easiest place to visit as there is a lot of political unrest in many countries. Ecuador and Chile recently had a lot of riots and protests and the countries are currently awaiting if new riots break out. After doing a lot of research we decided to visit Valparaíso despite of the recent incidents. The Dutch government says that you can visit Chile, but that you have to avoid the protests. We did avoid Santiago, as new riots often start in the capital city. Luckily during our time in Valparaíso we did not experience any issues and I was glad I got to visit this incredibly colorful city!

AREQUIPA: PERU’S PRETTIEST CITY?

Arequipa is one of the biggest cities in Peru and you are bound to visit it when you want to travel onwards to Chile or want to visit the Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world. Arequipa is often named as the prettiest city in Peru, but we disagreed with that and preferred Cusco. That is not to say we didn’t have an enjoyable time in Arequipa. We visited Arequipa for two nights, after arriving really early with the night bus from Cusco. Effectively we had two days to spend in Arequipa and we found that sufficient time, given that you don’t visit the Colca Canyon. In this blog I will give you an update regarding the things we did in Arequipa.

COULD YOU SPEND TOO MUCH TIME IN MENDOZA?

Visiting wine regions all over the world is one of my favorite things to do. Argentina has several wine regions, but Mendoza was the one I wanted to visit most. I had a really romantic idea of Mendoza, didn’t even know it was the name of a really large city in that region. Luckily we had the best stay in Mendoza, so no disappointments this time around. The Mendoza area is the perfect area for a longer stay; we loved the wineries, the foodie/fine dining culture, the climate, the kind people that live there and the amazing views of snow capped mountains overlooking the sunny vineyards.
