After our stay in the Provence the next destination for my mother and I was the Italian riviera. The shortest drive to Italy is via the Cote d’Azur, so we had the perfect opportunity to revisit some of my favorite cities at the Mediterranean: Monaco and Menton.

It is no secret that the Provence is one of my favorite places on earth. The Provence has been a great inspiration for Impressionist painters such as Paul Cezanne and it’s not hard to see why. The combination of gorgeous light, the countryside and the coherently colored villages make this place worth a visit. Last time, I visited the Provence in lavender season which makes this place even more lovely. This year we visited just after the sunflower season and I was super sad to see whole fields of withered sunflowers. The upside to visiting in September is that the weather is absolutely lovely and the huge crowds have left this area. We stayed in Aix-en-Provence and used it as a hub to explore the area. On route to the Provence my mother and I stayed a few nights in Lyon & Annecy. Lyon is a city I have often passed by, but have never stopped, so it was about time to stay a few nights in Lyon. I was very happy that I finally decided to visit Lyon as it is an amazingly diverse city, with a beautiful old town and many interesting sights! Lyon is quite hilly and it hosts two rivers (the Saone and the Rhone). The rivers flow directly through the (old) city and the city is connected via many bridges, of which some are pedestrian. The bridges and the rivers definitely give Lyon a fun aspect. We visited during perfectly sunny days, so people were enjoying the city from the water as there are many terraces located at the docks and on boats. From Lyon it is only a short drive to Annecy and I would definitely recommend that combination.
