PERFECT 4 DAY LOFOTEN ITINERARY WITH KIDS

SEPTEMBER 2025

Lofoten was like a dream come true. You might wonder whether these Artic islands of Norway are a good location to visit with kids and the answer is: absolutely! We visited in July and lucked out with the weather, experiencing little rain and even a bit of sunshine. I personally think nature locations are always good for holidays with kids, as it is like a natural playground. Luckily, this also held up for Lofoten. In this blogpost I will share exactly what we did over our four days in Lofoten.

Where we stayed

We chose Kræmmervika Havn as our base to explore Lofoten. It is located in Ballstad, which is about in between Reine and Henningsvaer, so perfect to explore a large area of Lofoten. We stayed in a traditional Rorbu/fisherman hut, which we found very cozy. Kræmmervika Havn is a beautiful complex of hotel, restaurant and rorbus overlooking the water, connected by wooden pathways. It definitely surpassed our expectations, it looked much more beautiful than expected. The rorbu was comfortable enough, suitable for cooking, though it was very basic, with mattresses on the floor. With € 170 a night it was on the expensive side, but that is to be expected in Lofoten. We didn’t try the restaurant, but apparently it is very good.

Day 1

On our first day we got up early for the Reinebringen hike. It was a bit cloudy, so we were a bit scared that the views were not that good, but luckily we were proven wrong. The Reinebringen hike is very steep, but also easily accessible because of the 2000 stairs. Our 4 year old was able to finish the hike by himself, bribing him every now and then with chocolate. I have done a separate blogpost on hiking with kids if you are interested to learn more.

The hike took us all morning, and afterwards we went for ice cream in the cute village of Reine. Reine is very close to Hamnoy, which is the ultimate Lofoten postcard picture, as you can see below.

After a quick photo stop we continued driving in the direction of Nusfjord. On our way we past the iconic Panorama Road, also called Batman Road. I think you can see why.

When we arrived to Nusfjord I was surprised that we had to pay a small entrance fee. It actually is a luxury resort in traditional Rorbu style. After 17h you can enter for free and eat at the restaurants, but they do close some parts of the resort to non-hotel guests. It was a bit weird, but the village is very beautiful at the fjord. We also loved the Italian restaurant, great pizzas!

Day 2

We started day 2 with a hike that started behind the hotel: the hike to Nonstinden/Ballstadheia. This hike offers a beautiful view over Ballstad, in a similar style as Reinebringen, but less popular. Behind the viewpoint you will find a gorgeous alpine style meadow, which we explored fully enjoying views in every direction.

After hiking we wanted to try the famous cinnamon buns at Glasshytta Vikten. Honestly, we didn’t love the buns, but the glassblowing demonstration was great. Next to Glasshytta you can find a gorgeous beach: Vikten beach, quite a hidden gem.

Day 3

On day 3 we had the most challenging hike of our trip: the hike to Offersøykammen. Unfortunately this hike was too heavy for our son, and we had to finish it taking turns. Absolutely recommend putting in the effort, I loved the views over the blue sea from the top!

After the hike we went to Lofoten’s most famous beach: Haukland Beach. The beach almost looks tropical, with incredibly blue water, super cold though!

Day 4

On day 4 it already was time for us to leave Lofoten. On our way to the airport we stopped at Henningsvaer. Definitely the cutest town that we visited, during the day it gets very lively with terraces and there are lots of boutique stores. We did have a feeling that the locals weren’t always happy with the amount of visitors as we saw warning signs everywhere. I would have loved to drone at the iconic football field, but this wasn’t allowed. Please respect the rules as we saw lots of tourists droning anyway. Don’t forget to have a cinnamon bun or pizza at shabby cool Trevarefabrikken.
