SCHLOSS SCHWERIN: HIGHLIGHT OF MECKLENBURG-VORPOMMERN

APRIL 2025

You may have never heard of the Northern German state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, but it certainly is an interesting region for tourism. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is located at the Baltic Sea and features a gorgeous coastline with spectacular islands such as Rรผgen and Usedom. The capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is Schwerin and this city is home to a fairytale castle, which we got to visit on our Northern German roadtrip. Schloss Schwerin is located beautifully isolated on an island in the lake of Schwerin. It is easily accessible as the island is connected to Schwerin via two bridges, so why not visit Schloss Schwerin? If you love castles such as Schloss Neuschwanstein and Linderhof you will love this one!

Practical information

Though it can get busy on weekends, it is not necessary to make reservations to visit the castle. In fact, it is not even possible! So this makes it a perfect spontaneous visit. You can visit the castle gardens for free and you need a ticket to enter the castle. Tickets for adults cost โ‚ฌ 8,5 p.p. and can be bought on site. During the tourist season the castle is open until 6PM, while it closes at 5PM in the shoulder season. On mondays the castle is closed. Please check the official website for actual hours. I personally found the gardens more interesting than the castle itself, but it does have some beautiful rooms that are worth visiting. The castle hosts the regional administration, so some parts cannot be visited as they host offices. Schloss Schwerin doesn’t have parking, but you can park nearby in the city center parking lots. The castle also has a restaurant, it looked a bit formal so we didn’t try it.

Gardens of Schloss Schwerin

I mainly would recommend Schloss Schwerin for its original gardens. The setting with lake views is gorgeous and it is filled with (seasonal) flowers! You can even find a grotto on the premises. What is particularly interesting is that castle is not symmetrical, so this gives interesting perspectives from the gardens. The style of the gardens is Baroque with hints of an English garden. The gardens surround the castle and a walk through the gardens is the perfect way to enjoy the 19th century castle. When it comes to gardens, I always find that pictures say more than words, so I hope you enjoy mine!

Food recommendation near Schloss Schwerin

As I said, we didn’t have lunch at the castle. We went to the old town of Schwerin instead to have lunch at Altstadtbrauhaus โ€žZum Stadtkrugโ€œ. It was very atmospheric and we loved the brewery style food!
