SCHWARZWALD RECOMMENDATION: KLOSTERRUINE HIRSAU

AUGUST 2024

I have this thing with ruins, so when we were driving through the Schwarzwald (Black forest) we decided to make a stop at Klosterruine Hirsau. The site is very well kept and it has a good atmosphere, so if you are in the area you should definitely bring a visit. I hope to inspire you with some of the pictures that we took!

Practical information

Klosterruine Hirsau is free to visit. You will find roadside parking next to the entrance. It is quite an iddylic location in the Schwarzwald, the site is beautifully maintained and it has a bit of a mysterious feel. The abbey is still in use and when we were visiting a wedding was just about to begin.

I found the ruins of the Jagdschloss the most beautiful, it was completed in around 1600. It already burned down a 100 years later, during the War of the Palatinate Succession. So if you imagine how long it has already been a ruin, the state is very impressive.

You can wander the grounds of Klosterruine Hirsau freely, there is no entrance fee and no opening times. The museum is usually open in the afternoon. During the weekend there is a little cafe that is open from 9AM-6PM.

We only visited for about an hour to stretch our legs on our way to the Dolomites, but I didn’t want to keep this spot from you. If you like Klosterruine Hirsau you will definitely like the All Saints Abbey ruins.
