TWO HIGHLIGHTS OF MUNICH: THIS IS WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IF YOU ARE SHORT ON TIME

APRIL 2023

On our Bavarian roadtrip we also stopped by Munich. Munich had been on my to visit list for quite some time, but I never managed to make it a priority. We were only in town for one night, which is way to short to enjoy everything that Munich has to offer, however I was very happy with the two things that we did do: visiting the Residenz & Hofbräuhaus. These are by no means original spots to visit, but they were very pleasant activities which I highly recommend.

Residenz

The Munich Residence is an enormous castle you will find in the heart of the city center, making it a very easy visit. The Residenz now functions as a museum and features several exhibits with decorative art. The Residenz was officially opened in 1385 and over the years it was greatly expanded and now features over 130 rooms. From 1508 until 1918 several Bavarian dukes and kings lived here. If you just want to visit the castle, the entrance fee is € 9, which I found an absolute steal. We visited in a weekend in March, it wasn’t too busy at the counter, so we bought our ticket on the spot. I absolutely loved our visit, the Residenz is built in a Versailles-like style, but you can still enjoy it without the massive crowds. The real draw is the Antiquarium, a room that is completely drenched in gold with a painted ceiling and a white and red marble floor. It is absolutely stunning and when we visited we only had to share it with about 10 other tourists. We walked the long route and were very impressed with the details and the state of the palace. I will show you some pictures below, so you can share my excitement. I must note that the Residenz is not baby/kid friendly as strollers are not allowed. Backpacks are not allowed either, so it might be some of a challenge to visit with little kids.

Hofbräuhaus

Another institution that you cannot miss on your Munich itinerary is Hofbräuhaus. It dates back to 1589, so you can imagine how stunning this brewery-restaurant is. It is absolutely massive, with many rooms to have lunch or dinner. During the weekend it is not possible to make reservations. We showed up for lunch and found one of the last tables, so I would definitely recommend going here during the day, as they might not have availability in the evenings. If you want a beer you can choose small (0,5L) or big (1,0L). They serve traditional meals as well, which are on the pricy side but very good value as the portion sizes are generous and include sides.
