ULTIMATE MILOS TRAVEL GUIDE: BEST ACTIVITIES ON MILOS GREECE (INCLUDING RECOMMENDATIONS WITH A BABY)

JULY 2022

I was able to tick Milos of my bucket list this year. Ever since I had seen pictures of Sarakiniko beach, I knew I had to see it with my own eyes. Milos however, is so much more than just Sarakiniko beach and in this guide I will include all must do activities and locations on one of the most beautiful islands of the Cyclades. Milos is relatively undiscovered and I was so surprised at how little people you would run into at the most popular activities. We visited Milos in May and were able to have some beaches to ourselves!

Where to stay

You will find all towns on Milos pretty close to each other as most villages are located on the east side of the island. You are most likely to find accomodation in Plaka, Pollonia or Adamantas. We decided to stay in Pollonia, as it features a strip of cute restaurants at the beach. Adamantas is the bigger town of the three and this is where your ferry will arrive. If you stay in Adamantas you could save on rental costs for a car, as Adamantas is connected to the other towns by bus and you can do boat tours from here. However for most activities and beaches you do need to hire a car anyway. Plaka is not located near the beach, but on a hill. I found it a very scenic village and it seems like a nice location to stay.

We stayed at Delmar Apartments & Suites right in to the center of Pollonia and near the beach. We loved our stay at Delmar as it was very boutique style, had super comfortable beds, featured great design features and the staff was very helpful. You must try the breakfast that will be served on your terrace or balcony.

Pollonia is a very small town, but it features a Greek cobblestone strip with restaurants, right next to the sea giving you that ultimate holiday feeling. The price-value of these restaurants is much better than in more expensive islands such as Mykonos and Santorini.

Sarakiniko beach

You cannot visit Milos without visiting Sarakiniko beach. You might have seen pictures of this all white volcanic beach that looks like the moon. I did so much research before I finally got to visit this beach and it still surprised me looking different than I expected, while still being super spectacular. The light at Sarakiniko gets incredibly harsh during the day, we ended up visiting three times. One time in the morning to do some droning, one afternoon to do swimming and one time during sunset. In May Saranikiko does not get busy until 10AM and we were able to find a spot in the shade during the afternoon. I can imagine this will not be possible in summer time. If you have a car, you can navigate to Sarakiniko beach and park your car in the free parking lot.

Besides being absolutely stunning, Sarakiniko beach was also my favorite activity with a baby. Despite being famous for its cliff jumping, there actually is a very large area with shallow water which has the perfect temperature and depth for visiting with a baby. Hugo loved splashing in the water and finding little rocks and branches. He also turned out to be a little hiker and did the 10 minute hike to the beach hiking by himself. Proud mama!

Plaka and Plaka Castle

You will find one of the most famous sunset spots of Milos near Plaka: Plaka Castle. We completed the 15 minute hike up to Plaka Castle from Plaka town before sunset, as we had to get back to our hotel with little Hugo. If you visit a bit before sunset you can capture the iconic church, before it gets more crowded. The sunset was absolutely insane, but unfortunately we had already left Plaka by the time the colors got super intense.

Plaka itself is a quintessential Greek island town with cobblestone streets with painted seams and lots of blue details. The main square is one big terrace, such a lovely spot for people watching.

Boat tour to Kleftiko

The Kleftiko caves are one of the main sights of Milos and definitely worth a visit. You actually get to swim through a lot of the caves, which I found a super cool activity. We were even able to spot bioluminescence. We booked a full day sailing trip group tour for € 95 per person and loved that we were able to do a lot of swimming. We did this tour when Hugo was 15 months old and still needed two naps during the day, the crew accomodated this by letting him sleep in one of the cabins, which worked out perfectly. Hugo loved that he got to explore the caves with us on the little boat and had a great day! We visited during the off season so not all boat tours were available yet, during the high season you can do all sorts of Kleftiko tours, also shorter ones.

Klima

Klima is a colorful fishing town, actually there is not a lot to do and I wouldn’t want to stay the night there (it actually is quite run down and isolated). If you love colorful towns, it still is a must visit. Klima is located just below Plaka, there is a little parking lot just outside the town where you can park your car for free. Our Kleftiko boat tour showed us Klima from the water (last pic).

Mandrakia

Mandrakia also is a little fishing village, but I found it in much better conditions than Klima. Probably because you will find the super popular seaside restaurant Medusa over here. Apparantly this is where the Dutch king eats when he visits Greece. We ended up at Medusa by accident, we didn’t love the food, but the location and staff are great!

Secret beaches

Milos has many hidden/secret beaches that you will only find after doing little hikes. Tsigrado beach is one of the most interesting ones, as you can only find it if you go down a ladder. If you are traveling with a baby you have to make some choices and a beach is not an easy spot to let a baby sleep. So I let Hielke visit some beaches and watched Hugo instead. Hielke loved Papafragas beach, where you could also enter sea caves.
