WÜRZBURG WEIHNACHTSMARKT: AUTHENTIC, LOCAL, RELAXED MARKET

MARCH 2024

I think my blogpost title sums up what you need to know about Würzburg’s Christmas markets: It is authentic, local and relaxed. If you would like to visit a Christmas market with a cozy vibe, but you are trying to escape the big crowds this one is a really good option. We spontaneously visited this market on the way back from Rothenburg ob der Tauber and were really happy with our choice. The stalls and decorations offered all the cozy vibes and we were able to explore on a relaxed pace.

Why visit the Christmas market in Würzburg?

Würzburg’s Christmas market is held in the four weeks leading up to Christmas. Even though Würzburg is a small, not incredibly touristy, city, the market is open every day. It features over 100 stalls and I was mainly impressed with the original gifts and crafts that were on offer. All the standard Christmas market food was available, such as glühwein, reibekuchen, spätzle, kaiserschmarrn, sausage varieties, so you can try all these German delicacies!

We visited the market on a Sunday, on our way back to the Netherlands from Rothenburg ob der Tauber and were surprised at how relaxed the vibes were. We visited relatively early in the day and all the stalls were open, people were visiting but there were no real crowds.

If you walk from the Oberer markt to the Marienplatz you will pass the Falkenhaus, which is a yellow Rococo style house, which is such a pretty back drop for the market. The Marienkapelle also towers over the main Christmas market, such a lovely location for a Christmas market. On the Marienplatz there were several stores with (affordable) Christmas bulbs. There also was an Käthe Wohlfahrt store, which didn’t have a queue (and if you know Käthe Wohlfahrt that says a lot). From the Marienplatz the Christmas markets stretch out over the Eichhornstrasse, where you can find the Würzburger Weihnachtspyramide.

I am definitely revisiting Würzburg, because we didn’t have time to visit of of its sights. Next time I will be visiting Würzburg Residence & the hofgarten and I want to cross the Old Main Bridge. We passed Marienburg Fortress with the car and it has lovely views over Würzburg. Würzburg is definitely worthy of an overnight visit, so you can visit even more than just the Christmas markets.
