HAPPY IN HEPPENHEIM: SURPRISINGLY CHARMING LOCATION IN GERMANY

AUGUST 2022

I pinned Heppenheim on google maps after having seen a picture of the gingerbread town center. It turned out to be the perfect stop when we were on our way to Baden-Baden. I expected the old town to consist of the exact three houses that I saw in the picture, but the town turned out to be much bigger and was super charming. We visited during summer time, while the region’s wine festival was in full swing, which created a cozy atmosphere.

Practical information

You will find Heppenheim in the Bundesregion Hessen. Heppenheim is located in the Hessische Bergstrasse, which is an area known for its quality wines. We tried the local Rieslingsekt and were very impressed! I loved that Heppenheim was secluded by mountains with vineyards, such a lovely backdrop for the quintessential half-timbered houses. Overlooking Heppenheim you can find the Starkenburg castle, which also produces wine. Heppenheim features several restaurants, we had tapas at cozy Empanada, but you can also find restaurants which serve regional food. Even though the town is quite relaxed, there are plenty of options for hotels, serving every budget. We stayed in a free parking lot with our campervan, which worked out perfectly as well.

Why visit Heppenheim?

Just have a look at my pictures… Heppenheim turned out to be hidden gem, only known for its charm by locals and other Germans. We didn’t hear a single foreigner while we were visiting. In the morning you will have the old town to yourself, while in the afternoon people start gathering in the market square. The old town consists of half-timbered houses, of which many are covered in grapevines. The houses are very well maintained, you will find many rose bushes and potted plants displayed, which give the town a very good vibe.
