HOW YOU SHOULD VISIT THE KRAVICA WATERFALLS

NOVEMBER 2023

The Kravica waterfalls in Bosnia have become a very popular activity over the past years. However, there are still ways to enjoy these beautiful falls without crowds. We stayed the night at the campsite which is located right next to the waterfalls, staying here gives you unlimited access to the falls (after you paid the entrance fee) and you can enjoy them in quiet times. The experience in Kravica reminded me of traveling in South-East Asia, with lush nature, which you are allowed to participate in. In this blogpost I will give you a realistic image of what to expect when visiting Kravica waterfalls.

Practical information

The Kravica waterfalls are located near the Bosnian-Croatian border. Because of its proximity to Dubrovnik it has become a popular daytrip. Tickets for the Kravica waterfalls cost € 10 per person and parking is free. Near the waterfalls you will find several informal restaurants, who offer snack type of meals. If you want to stay the night at Kravica, there is a campsite. After you bought tickets to the waterfalls, you can drive up to the gate next to the entrance and you can tell the guard you come for the campsite. Camping at Kravica costs € 15 per night and it is collected in cash in the evening by the owner. Please note that the ammenties are limited.

Kravica waterfalls

What makes the Kravica waterfalls special is that you can swim in them. During the day you will find lots of people enjoying an ice cold dip near the falls. You can even rent a kayak to enjoy the area. Kravica consists of several areas, but we loved the main area the best. Because Kravica is a popular daytrip from Dubrovnik and Mostar it gets really crowded during they day. I would recommend to visit early or after dinner to enjoy the waterfalls on a quiet moment. This is easiest if you stay on the campsite.

View of the Kravica falls from the entrance. Don’t they remind you of Plitvice?

Another popular activity is to join a boat tour on the adjoining river. This seemed a bit silly to me. We could jump into the river from the campsite and didn’t see the need to do this tour.

Overall, I would recommend to factor in about two hours for Kravica waterfalls, which is just enough for a dip or relaxation. Below I will drop some pictures that I took during the day, to give you an honest idea of how busy you can expect the falls to be during high season.

Because we stayed in the campsite we were able to visit at 7AM and we visited with only 10 other people.

Why you should stay at the campsite

We loved our stay at the campsite as it was in a beautiful nature location, with lots of free space and other likeminded adventurers. The campsite is located next to a little river, which is perfect for taking a dip. By staying in the campsite you can visit the waterfalls at the earliest time and you can be the last one to leave. To me it didn’t feel like opening hours were strictly monitored for camping guests. You have to pay in cash with the owner and he will also provide you with a Bosnian drink. For kids there is plenty of space to roam around and there is a natural sandpit where the owner dropped some toys, overall great fun!
