OUR TIME IN CUSCO AND A VISIT TO MARAS AND MORAY

Before getting to Machu Picchu (!!!) we had some days to spend in Cusco to get used to the altitude. Cusco is situated at a height of 3.400m and if you want to do any treks in this area it is sensible to stay in Cusco for a few days. This will also make your Machu Picchu experience much more relaxed! It definitely isn’t a punishment to have to stay in Cusco for a few days, it is a beautiful colonial city and there are many day trips you can do from Cusco. If you want to, you could enjoy yourself in this area for about two weeks. We decided to stay in Cusco for five nights, not including our overnight to Machu Picchu. To us, this was sufficient time to explore this area and get used to the altitude. Read about our experience in Cusco and our day trip to Maras & Moray.

HUMANTAY LAKE AND A NOTE ON TOURIST TRAPS IN PERU

Humantay lake is one of the prettiest lakes of Peru, it is located about 3 hours from Cusco. We did a day trip to Humantay lake, where I tried to hike at an altitude of 4200 meters, which did not turn out very easy. Though Humantay lake is absolutely stunning, we were a little bit down about Peru as a country for tourists, so therefore I included a note about tourist traps in Peru. In Peru we found the way of travel less relaxed than in Colombia and Ecuador and I hope that Peru will change some things in the future.

SAND BOARDING IN HUACACHINA AND A SHORT VISIT TO THE NAZCA LINES

Huacachina was one of the stops in Peru we were most excited for as we were going to try sand boarding over here! The town itself is built around a desert oasis, which looked super spectacular when you climb up the dunes. Huacachina can be kind of a backpacker party town, which is probably why it doesn’t have a great reputation with all sorts of travelers. Huacachina is a place you either love or hate and we fell in the love category. After our stay in Huacachina Peru Hop took us to the Nazca viewing tower for a quick visit to the Nazca lines.
