VISITING THE GREEN CITADEL OF HUNDERTWASSER IN MAGDEBURG

JUNE 2022

I fell in love with the buildings of architect Hundertwasser when I first visited one of his buildings in Vienna. One of his most famous buildings can be found in Magdeburg, so we decided to do a quick stop on our way back from Berlin to visit the beautiful pink building. Magdeburg itself is pretty charming as well, with lots of parks and baroque buildings, but we focused our visit on the “Green Citadel” of Magdeburg.

Hundertwasser

The architect Hundertwasser is Austrian and you will find his buildings mostly in surrounding countries. He was born in 1928 and passed away in 2000. I personally love his architecture as he did not like straight lines and his designs are very unique. His buildings can truly make people happy! Hundertwasser had a great love for nature and you will notice that in many of his projects. He was always looking for ways to let humans coexist with nature, so you will often find interesting rooftop gardens in his designs. I have visited the Hunderwasserhaus in Vienna and fell in love with his style. I discovered that Hundertwasser designed a grand building in Magdeburg, which is called the Green Citadel, even though it is pink 😉 We made a quick stop in Magdeburg to admire this building. There are some parking spots nearby, but during the weekend you might have to search some time to find a good spot.

Pictures of the green citadel

Below you will find my pictures of the Green Citadel. The Green Citadel is mainly used for housing, just imagine yourself living in such a happy place! On the ground level you will find some stores, a bakery and a restaurant. We bought a delicious lunch and ate it in our campervan.
