I originally wasn’t planning on making a blog on Freiburg, as we would only have a little bit of time there on our way to Switzerland, but I ended up loving it, so I couldn’t resist! I love Freiburg as a summer destination, because of the amazing beer gardens and all the water activities that you can do in Freiburg.
Practical information
You can find Freiburg in South-West Germany, near the Elzas and the Schwarzwald, it is a lovely area with lots of cool activities and city, so you can easily combine visiting Freiburg with other destinations. Freiburg is known as a very green city and has a left wing feel to it. Freiburg has done active city planning to combat climate change. Bordering the medieval city center you will find a large park with water terraces and the public transport is very well developed. We were able to park our camper van for free within walking distance of the city center.
Medieval city center
Freiburg’s Altstadt is not very big and you can go everywhere by walking. Freiburg features lots of colorful and fachwerk houses, so you can imagine me being very happy walking around 🙂 If you are looking for a good view of Freiburg, I would recommend to walk up the Schlossberg. You will find this park east of the city center. We were surprised at the atmospheric beer garden which you will find while walking up.
Freiburg & water
Water plays a central role in Freiburg. Freiburg features little water canals, called “Bächle”. Apparently they are already in Freiburg since the 13th century and they were used as a water supply and to combat fires. They also had a function leading water out of town and irrigating nearby fields. Right now, they are perfect for taking a little dip on a hot day, it added a lot of fun to Hugo’s day!
South of the city center you will find the river the Dreisam. This river is surrounded by a large green park, where you will find people relaxing on a sunny day. We saw loads of people taking a dip into the river terraces. Next time we are visiting Freiburg we are bringing a towel to join in on this fun!
Streetart
I had seen pictures of the “graffitihaus” and wanted to visit even though it is located out of the city center. In a lefty city I expected the street art to be really protest-like, but was surprised at the lovely scenes inspired by Beatrix Potter! Unfortunately there was a sign blocking good views of the house, but I still managed to take some snaps.
