AUTUMN RECOMMENDATION: MULLERTHAL IN LUXEMBOURG

OCTOBER 2023

Last April I visited the Mullerthal in Luxembourg for a long weekend of camping. When we discovered this region, I grew embarrassed that I had never shown interest before: the Mullerthal is a stunning region! Somehow the Mullerthal felt very autumnal in April and I am sure it is even more beautiful when the leaves are turning colors. I therefore highly recommend to visit the Mullerthal in autumn. In this blogpost I will give you all my recommendations for the best sights and hikes.

Where we stayed

We stayed at Camping La Pinede in the middle of the Mullerthal. I specially wanted to stay here because some hikes start right at this campsite. The campsite was very well reviewed, and I must say that I completely agree with the reviews. Camping La Pinede had a small campsite feel, while having the amenities of a large campsite. The pitches were big, some had a view and were in the middle of nature. The campsite features a nature playground and has a very good restaurant on site. We will definitely come back here!

Interesting sights

What I really liked about the Mullerthal is that there are sights every few kilometers, if you just start driving around you will probably already find them. Not much planning is necessary, and when we visited in April we didn’t have issues finding (free) parking. You can decide to do the full Mullerthal trail, which is 112 kilometers, but we just did parts of it instead. These are the activities & sights that we did:

Schiessentümpel Cascade: This is one of the bigger waterfalls of the Mullerthal and one of its most popular sights. If you want to have this one to yourself, I would recommend to visit early. Near the Schiessentümpel you can find the Mëllerdall stairs which I found equally impressive. This is one of the most fairytale like landscapes of the Müllerthal, they totally could have filmed Lord of the Rings over here.

Perekop: This is a gigantic rock, and you climb it from a stairs which is carved out of the middle. The fun starts with parking your car underneath the rock. On top you will find a viewing platform and forest trails. Don’t forget to check out the path at the other side of the road which is equally impressive! This area reminded me of Bohemian Switzerland in Czech Republic, which I loved as well. Luckily, this one is located closer to home!

Wollefsschlucht: This gorge (Gorge du Loup) takes a little effort to find, but is another example of a beautiful sight in Mullerthal. When we visited I think a storm had just passed because we saw lots of dead wood, which made it a little less cinematic, but I can still imagine the Lion King on top of the gorge.

Kuelscheier: This is one of the most exciting sights of the Mullerthal. Kuelscheier means Coal Barn and apparently they used to store coal in these caves. Some parts of the cave were pitch black and freightened Hugo a bit, but you don’t want to miss out on this gorgeous spot! It is about a 30 minute walk from the parking or Camping La Pinede.

Buurgkapp: From Camping La Pinede we were able to do the 30 minute loop hike at Buurgkapp, which had very cute stairs in rock formations. You can easily combine this sight with the Kuelscheier, as you use the same parking for both spots.

Echternach: Echternach is Luxembourg’s oldest town and also the only larger town in the Mullerthal area. If you want to have choice in restaurants, hereis where you must go. The center itself was quite charming as well, not a highlight, I much preferred the nature of the Mullerthal, but there is a beautiful market square, park, church and castle.
