HOW TO VISIT SWITZERLAND WITH KIDS

JULY 2023

This year we visited Switzerland for our spring vacation in June. We had a great time and were surprised that Switzerland was such a good destination while traveling with a toddler. Switzerland turned out to be super friendly. In this blogpost I will explain how to best visit Switzerland with kids.

Where we stayed

We decided to explore the Jungfrau region for a week. One of the most picturesque villages in the Jungfrau region is Lauterbrunnen. In Lauterbrunnen you will find campsite Jungfrau, it is located surrounded by the iconic rocks of Lauterbrunnen, even providing you with a view of the waterfall from your camping spot. They have a restaurant that is kid friendly, a playground (where they even had a bouncy castle) and family shower rooms. We love camping with Hugo as he can cycle around the campsite while we are preparing food etc. Camping Jungfrau is a big campsite, but didn’t feel too big or loud and we found most visitors to be welcoming of each other and kid friendly. We paid € 450 for a pitch including electricity for a week, making it one of the best budget options to visit Switzerland.

Why Switzerland is great with kids

The playgrounds: The playgrounds in Switzerland are the best ones I have seen. Apparantly, they are built after the snow has disappeared, meaning they will look very fresh. You will find a playground on pretty much every mountain you will visit, they often are located next to a restaurant, proving some relaxing time for the parents and they have the best views!

The food: The local food in Switzerland is incredibly adjusted to the taste of kids. They have many potatoe, cheese and pasta dishes. The pasta even comes accompanied by apple sauce, making it a feast for kids! There were hardly any spices in the food and Hugo loved tasting everything! If you have good weather, the restaurants have large terraces outside, so you won’t have to worry about your kid making a mess or noise.

The trains: We bought the Jungfrau travel pass for a very hefty € 260 per adult and had unlimited travel on trains and gondelas in the Jungfrau region. Kids until 6 are free, so make the most of it if you still have young kids! Besides that traveling in the train is a lot of fun and pretty kid-friendly, you will see trains passing by on each hike, sparking joy with the kids. Hugo loved hearing the train whistle and seeing it pass by!

The gondelas: We took several gondelas up into the mountains and for kids the gondelas itself are already an activity. If you take the gondela up to Mannlichen you can book an extra ticket online and you are allowed to travel on top of the gondela!

The activities: Hugo loves nature, hiking and climbing on things, which is perfect in combination with Switzerland. We also decided to visit the Jungfraujoch where you can sleigh even in summer time. This added such a fun element to our holiday. There are also lots of summer toboganning rides and on Grindelwald first you can rent go-karts and “fly” in the mountains. We hiked through fields with cows, which was also great for entertainment value!
