CHERRY BLOSSOMS IN BONN

APRIL 2022

Bonn has named itself the cherry blossom capital of Germany, so of course I had to see that with my own eyes. The COVID travel restrictions hindered me from visiting this phenomenon in prior years, so I was super happy to discover that the blooms were about to peak in the weekend of April 9. Even though the weather lately has been less than great, the blossoms showed they were true heroes by blooming in April anyway. In this blogpost you can find out all about the blossoms in Bonn.

Practical information

Bonn has several cherry blossom alleys, which all can be found north of the city center. We parked in the Stadthausgarage, which is so close to the cherry blossoms that you can already spot from your parking spot. Another option is Friedensplatzgarage, which is also very close. The two most famous blossom alleys are Breitestrasse and Heerstrasse, both are lined by beautifully large prunus trees. I found the blossom neighborhood quite charming, you can find independent stores and little cafes. In the weekend of 9-10 April 2022 a street food festival is organized, to celebrate the cherry blossoms even more. We visited on a Friday afternoon, while the weather wasn’t great and didn’t find it too busy. I heard the cherry blossom alleyways get really crowded over the weekend (especially when the weather is nice). While I publish this post the cherries are in full bloom. If you want to go in another year, I would recommend to follow VisitBonn on Instagram to check when they expect the blooms to reach peak. This is usually in the month April.

Cherry blossoms

The cherry blossoms were such a spectacle. I loved wandering through the cherry blossoms streets with the other admirers, it was such a happy sight! Of course pictures say more than words, so check out my pictures below.

Is Bonn worth it?

We really liked the vibe of Bonn. Besides the cherry blossoms, it has a quite attractive city center. We weren’t very lucky with the weather, so we didn’t walk all the way to the Rheinpromenade, but I am sure that is lovely spot when the sun is out too. The Bonner Münster (cathedral) was currently being renovated, but we were able to spot some beautiful blossoms nearby. The city center featured a lot of shops, ranging from the typical high street stores, to independent gift and clothes shops and warehouses featuring interesting brands. Restaurants in Germany are very affordable, compared to the Netherlands and we had a delicious foliekartoffel and weissbier at Spitz, where we were received in a lovely and child friendly way. If you like to wine & dine and do some shopping, Bonn is definitely interesting for a little weekend getaway.
